Our Head Trainer Julia Smith has just been awarded accreditation for Companion Dog (CD) training for dog training and canine behaviour, through the Kennel Club Accredited Instructor (KCAI) scheme.

The scheme aims to unite all who work with teaching and behaviour, and in so doing, to develop the best service possible for the dog owning public and training enthusiasts.  It is designed to promote education; it's not a course but it does set a syllabus. The scheme offers a personal 'Accreditation' by written, oral and practical assessment, provided all the criteria, set by the scheme, are satisfied.

The Scheme aims to:

1. Form a united membership body, committed to helping others appreciate dogs in society.

2. Educate its members and, through them, the dog-owning public.

3. Set standards of instructing and offer a personal and credible qualification.

Its objectives are therefore to:

  • _ establish a national register of qualified Instructors
  • _ provide educational guidance for members
  • _ encourage and maintain high standards of instructing
  • _ help unite all aspects of training and behaviour
  • _ provide a communication network for Instructors
  • _ promote responsible dog ownership

All members are:

  • _ subject to the Kennel Club Code of Practice for Instructors
  • _ actively promoting dogs and responsible ownership
  • _ committed to work in the best interest of canine welfare

Members are also acknowledged for their levels of:

  • _ practical instructing experience
  • _ knowledge and range of training skills
  • _ knowledge of care, welfare and safety
  • _ understanding of dog / human psychology and behaviour
  • _ expertise in individual canine activities
  • _ 'Accreditation' by credit points allocation, membership grades and awards.
